Vitamin D is an essential mood elevating health enhancement. We can achieve needed levels naturally through the sun, or you can ingest your vitamin D in a pill. Unfortunately, not all of us live In climates that promise year round sunny days. If your town sees more clouds than sunshine in the cooler months (or even all year long) you should definitely consider vitamin D supplements to avoid the winter blues. Des Moines family dentist, Dr. Jessica Johnson, will highlight a study that shows a potential benefit of vitamin D in helping to prevent tooth decay.
Vitamin D for Stronger Teeth?
A multi-cultural study published last year in Nutrition Reviews focused on data collected from sixty years of compiled clinical trials. About 3,000 children from various countries were identified as having a 50% reduction in cavities when they received ample vitamin D. Dr. Philippe Hujoel is a professor at the University of Washington, helmed the research. Said Dr. Hujoel, “My main goal was to summarize the clinical trial database so that we could take a fresh look at this vitamin D question.”
The Vitamin D Debate
Dr. Hujoel noted the ongoing debate regarding vitamin D’s role in preventing tooth decay, though it is widely accepted that the vitamin can help prevent bone loss. The American Medical Association and the U.S. National Research Council pointed out vitamin D’s potential tooth decay fighting powers back in the 1950s. However, the American Dental Association (ADA) refuted this claim. Dr. Hujoel contends that the opposing conclusions don’t make sense when you look at the evidence from the trials reviewed. Dr. Michael Hollick is a professor of medicine (Boston University Medical Center) agrees that vitamin D plays a useful role in dental health, noting that, “children who are vitamin D deficient have poor and delayed teeth eruption and are prone to dental caries.”
