This time of year brings about intense allergies for many people. Sometimes it’s hard to tell whether allergies have you down, or you are actually getting sick with all of your sniffles, sneezes, exhaustion, and scratchy throat symptoms. If not from allergies, most sore throats are caused by a virus which causes pain and inflammation. Most sore throats are not serious medical issues, but they can cause extreme discomfort. West Des Moines dentist, Dr. Jessica Johnson, hopes you keep your upcoming dental appointment even if you have allergies. However, if you have a contagious virus, that’s another story.
Hydration is Essential
If you have been diagnosed with an infection such as tonsillitis or strep throat, we’d rather you reschedule your appointment for your own comfort as well as the health of others. To keep yourself comfortable at home, try gargling with saltwater every couple of hours. One teaspoon of salt dissolved in eight ounces of warm water is surprisingly soothing. Just make sure not to swallow the salt water as the sodium content will be through the roof and could upset your stomach and prove abrasive on your raw throat. You may also find tea, broth, or warm water with lemon and honey provide temporary relief and keep you nicely hydrated.
Take the Edge Off and Rest
When fighting a virus, there are many ways to relieve you pain. Over-the-counter remedies include acetaminophen, ibuprofen, numbing sprays, and lozenges. Follow your general doctor’s advice and take antibiotics as prescribed if you have a bacterial infection. Tobacco products are a major irritant to a healthy throat, let alone a sore one. Avoid smoking if you can. Finally, make sure to attain plenty of sleep and try to limit intense physical activity until you are back in good health.
