Many oral health problems stem from a lack of preventive maintenance. Along with the American Dental Association, Dr. Johnson recommends that patients receive an exam and cleaning every six months. This ensures that any developing dental problem is caught in its earliest stage and that your teeth are kept in a condition that is uninviting to the plaque and tartar that cause tooth decay and gum disease.
The First Exam with Your West Des Moines Dentist
When you arrive for your exam, we will take a set of digital X-rays. Unlike traditional radiography, digital radiography requires 90% less radiation. Your diagnostic data will include radiographs and intraoral pictures taken inside the mouth. The images will be sent directly to the dentist’s chair-side monitor for review. She will use the information these pictures provide, along with a visual examination, to determine if any decay or damage is present.
Dr. Johnson and her team use ultrasonic scaling to remove plaque and tartar buildup, as opposed to strictly manual scaling. Ultrasonic scaling minimizes irritation to the gums and discomfort for the patient.
First appointments generally take 1 hour to complete. Dr. Johnson sets aside this time for initial visits so that she can develop an in-depth familiarity with your smile and a personal relationship with you. Sharing digital images and discussing your situation, Dr. Johnson will work with you to develop a treatment plan that will restore oral health, then maintain it long term. Our goal is for you to keep your smile strong and healthy throughout life.
