Dental extraction involves the complete removal of a tooth. There are many reasons why you might have a tooth extracted, including:
- The tooth is decayed beyond restoration
- The tooth is fractured or broken and cannot be repaired
- You are preparing for orthodontic treatment
- You have extra teeth
- You are being fitted for dentures
- Wisdom tooth removal
Simple extractions involve the removal of a tooth that is visible, using local anesthesia. Surgical extractions involve unerupted teeth, or teeth that are under the surface of the gums. This procedure requires an incision and the patient will usually receive general anesthesia.
Dr. Johnson performs simple extractions in her West Des Moines dental office. If you need a tooth removed to accommodate braces or prosthetic teeth, or if you are suffering from tooth decay or gum disease, or if you have fractured a tooth, the dentist will be able to remove this tooth in-office. However, if you require surgical extraction, Dr. Johnson will be able to refer you to an excellent oral surgeon.
